Understanding Hypermobility: Building Strength and Stability That Lasts

If you’ve ever been told you’re “double-jointed” or super flexible, you might have hypermobility. While it can be a great party trick, being extra bendy often comes with hidden challenges — aching joints, fatigue, frequent sprains, or that feeling that your body just doesn’t hold together the way it should.

At Wisdom Physiotherapy, we work with many people who have hypermobility syndromes or joint instability. With the right approach, you can feel stronger, more confident, and in control of your body — without giving up the activities you love.

What is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility means your joints move beyond the normal range of motion. This can happen in one or two joints, or throughout the body. Some people are naturally flexible, but for others, it’s linked to connective tissue differences such as Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS).

When your joints move too easily, the muscles and ligaments around them must work overtime to keep you stable. This can lead to:

  • Recurring joint pain or subluxations (partial dislocations)

  • Muscle tightness or fatigue

  • Poor balance and coordination

  • “Clumsiness” or frequent sprains

  • Digestive or fatigue-related symptoms (in some cases)

The good news? With the right strengthening and movement training, your body can learn to stabilise and protect itself beautifully.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapists play a key role in helping people with hypermobility build strength, control, and confidence.

At Wisdom Physiotherapy, our approach is gentle but progressive — designed to meet your body where it’s at.

Your physio will:

  • Assess your joint stability, posture, and muscle balance

  • Teach you strategies to reduce strain on vulnerable joints

  • Address areas of overuse and muscle tension

  • Design a graded strength program that builds support around each joint

  • Guide you on pacing, recovery, and flare-up management

Our goal is to help you move well — not just to survive daily activities, but to thrive in them.

Why Clinical Pilates is Ideal for Hypermobility

Clinical Pilates is one of the most effective forms of movement for people with hypermobility. It focuses on control before flexibility, using precise, low-load exercises to strengthen your deep stabilising muscles.

In our boutique studios in Nedlands and Claremont, your physio will guide you through a tailored Clinical Pilates program that helps you:

  • Build joint stability and postural control

  • Strengthen safely without overstretching

  • Improve balance, coordination, and proprioception (body awareness)

  • Learn efficient movement patterns to prevent injury

  • Re-train your nervous system to trust movement again

Over time, you’ll feel more supported, less fatigued, and more confident in your body.

Living Well with Hypermobility

Hypermobility isn’t something you need to “fix” — it’s something to understand and manage well.

Learning how to move effectively, pace yourself, and strengthen strategically can transform how your body feels day to day.

At Wisdom Physiotherapy, we are experienced in helping people with hypermobility and chronic pain find long-term strength and balance.

We’ll meet you where you are, guide you with empathy, and celebrate every step of progress along the way.
