Ankle sprains are extremely common accounting for approximately 25% of all sports-related injuries.
Whilst the majority of ankle sprains result in soft tissue damage, a portion of more severe sprains can cause bone fractures. As Physiotherapists, we can order X-Rays and other investigations to help provide the most accurate diagnosis to get you back on the field. But how do we know if you need an X-Ray?
Medical professionals have developed what is called The Ottawa Ankle Rules, which are a series of tests used to determine if an X-Ray is required following a sprained ankle. When used by a trained professional they enable us to catch 97% of fractures.
Ottawa Ankle Rules
- An Ankle X-Ray is only required if there is pain in the Malleolar zone and…

2. An Ankle X-Ray is only required if there is pain in the mid foot zone and…
-

- Tenderness at point D or

Physiotherapists are experts in musculoskeletal conditions, so if you have recently rolled your ankle it is important to have it examined to get the correct diagnosis and management from day one.
