Rowing is a fantastic pursuit for people of all ages — it strengthens the body, calms the mind, and builds community. It provides excellent cardiovascular fitness and full-body strength. But for many rowers, lower back pain can be a frustrating obstacle that keeps them off the water for long periods.
The Common Cause: Pelvic Position at the Catch
One of the most common causes of lower back pain in rowers is poor pelvic position at the “catch.” Most good coaches will preach the importance of maintaining a neutral pelvic position here. Ideally, the rower rolls their weight onto their sit bones, creating a neutral spine or a mild “C” shape — without excessive rounding or arching of the lower back.
However, as fatigue sets in, this posture often deteriorates, placing extra strain on the lumbar spine.
Why This Happens
For many rowers — particularly young males — their biomechanics simply don’t allow this optimal catch position. As a result, they enter the catch with too much lumbar flexion (rounding), which loads the soft tissues of the lower back and can lead to overuse injuries.
Having good range of motion in the hips and ankles is crucial to protect the back. To achieve the desired position at the catch, a rower should be able to perform a full squat without the heels lifting off the ground.
If you struggle with this, it’s often due to:
Tight hamstrings or gluteal muscles
Hip joint stiffness
Tight calves or restricted ankle mobility
How Clinical Pilates Makes the Difference
This is where Clinical Pilates can make a remarkable impact. Under the guidance of a physiotherapist, Clinical Pilates helps rowers:
Build deep core strength to support the lumbar spine and maintain correct posture throughout each stroke.
Improve flexibility and mobility in the hips, hamstrings, and ankles, allowing a more efficient and pain-free catch position.
Enhance body awareness and control, teaching rowers to activate the right muscles at the right time.
Prevent recurrence of injury through personalised exercise programs that address individual weaknesses or asymmetries.
By combining hands-on physiotherapy with Clinical Pilates, rowers can retrain their movement patterns, improve power output, and stay on the water longer — with less risk of pain or strain.
